Physiotherapy

The Department of Physiotherapy, in addition to organised teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, participates in a number of projects related to health promotion. The teaching content mastered by students is based on professional and scientific knowledge in the field of physiotherapy. Teaching is organised in well-equipped laboratories and lecture rooms of the Faculty.

Teaching is also conducted at the following locations: Thalassotherapia Opatija and Crikvenica, Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka, Orthopaedic Clinic Lovran, Nursing Homes, Brašćine-Pulac Rehabilitation Centre, Education and Training Centre, Scipion Polyclinic, Peharec Polyclinic, and other institutions where knowledge is acquired through WBL – Work Based Learning.

With a tradition dating back to 1984, the physiotherapy study programme was initially delivered at the Faculty of Medicine. It has undergone numerous changes, from curriculum content to duration, evolving from a two-year to a three-year programme in line with EU higher education guidelines. In recent years, the programme follows qualification requirements and competencies of physiotherapists through teaching based on evidence from professional and scientific research, as well as national umbrella organisations responsible for the development of the profession.

In addition to teaching facilities, the Faculty also houses a Biomechanics Laboratory, which supports the development of the scientific component of physiotherapy.

Through cooperation with institutions in Croatia and universities in other EU member states, the physiotherapy programme continuously works on improving and enhancing the quality of both teaching staff and the study programme itself.
